Inspiration Series _ Episode 8 _ Piety is Here
Where does piety come from? Allah honored man in several ways. He honored man by creating all of nature to mankind's benefit. He honored man by giving him intellect and taught mankind writing, reading, reasoning, and inventing. Allah also honored man by sending Messengers and Prophets to remind him of his purpose on Earth by teaching him how to worship and attain his character and, inshAllah, reach Heaven. We must ask ourselves, what can we do to keep this honor and not betray this honor Allah has given us without us even asking for it. The Prophet (saaws) taught us to value people and honor them despite what we may see of them, i.e their physical or material characteristics. Just as Allah has honored us, He has commanded us to honor one another. The Prophet (saaws) told us never backbite even the lowest of people (even when you know is it true!)
My sideline takeaway: While listening I kept thinking of all the times I'd hear others giving excuses for someone else's mistakes and wrong doings. This video really put that into perspective for me. Those that have this quality are truly abiding by the teaching of Islam. We try out best not to talk about people in settings so we are not of those that backbite. When we are wronged or see a loved one doing wrong, it becomes even more difficult to honor their character and not "complain" to others about what they are doing. To me, this is the true test of piety. Even when one is wronged by another, is holding a grudge and slandering them of a pious character or forgiving, providing an excuse, and moving on with life of pious character?
The other takeaway for me was to not always judge a book by its cover, as so they say. Just because a man is poor or less fortunate in his life, it does not say if he is better or lesser of a person. This take away reminded me of the video I saw of a random person asking people for food because he was hungry. Who shared his food? Not the random people sitting in the restaurant, but it was the homeless man that shared his pizza.
When one enters an art gallery, not every piece of art is interpreted in the same manner by each individual. Just as each of us may take away something different from the same video. Please watch this short video above and share with us your "take away". What did you get from the video? How does it inspire you? Let us share and learn from each other.
